Am I the only one who finds these light-up deer profoundly creepy? They're everywhere these days. They look like some kind of ethereal deer skeleton, staring at you from the bushes. Oh, and some of them MOVE. Very slowly, almost imperceptibly. It's horrifying.
So at work we have these things called "crew pies", which are basically pizzas made for the employees to share. They generally get eaten up pretty fast, except for the last piece, which is subjected to a strange ritual.
No one wants to be the one to take the last slice, so what happens is someone will take the pizza cutter and cut the slice in half, eating the new, smaller slice. The process is then repeated by the next employee to wander by, and so on, until all that's left is just a tiny sliver, like so:
Of course, according to Zeno's Dichotomy Paradox the pizza will never be completely eaten, and there will always be pizza left for anyone who wants it. At least, until yours truly comes along and eats the entire sliver.
We get moths in the apartment all the time, probably because we're the only ones in our building with our lights on at 3 am. Most are pretty small, but a few get quite big. The other day, though, our cat caught one that defied belief.
I switched to comcast recently so I have to cancel my Verizon service. I'm on hold right now waiting for a representative from the 'Cancellations Department', which is apparently swamped. I've been sitting here for about 20 minutes and I swear the easy-listening music hasn't changed at all. I think it's about three minutes of music on a loop. So anyway, I have nothing better to do than update my LJ.
So what's new? I'm getting new tires and brake pads on my car tomorrow. I'm super excited because for the first time, I get to take advantage of "Free Beef Days" at Les Schwab! Weeeeeeee! Free meat! I'm also gonna get clean out my car and give it a wash, cause I like everything to feel like new.
Ok, this music is starting to drive me nuts. Why didn't I wait to call until after lunch? I'm starving!
In other news, I've been playing Guitar Hero II and doing quite well at it. I've gotten to the point where I can beat about half the songs on expert mode, which is the hardest setting. For those who don't know what Guitar Hero is, or have a hard time visualizing how difficult expert mode is, I have found this YouTube video that should properly demonstrate what it's like.
Keep in mind that that is not me in the video. When I play Rush's YYZ, I do it with much more dignity and poise. The real problem with guitar hero is whenever I hear a song with a lot of guitar on the radio, I picture those little dots flying at me.
Ok, I'm still on hold. I started writing this at 10:40 (with a short break to look up guitar hero videos), it's now 11:15. I've been on hold for almost an hour. I timed the music; it loops every 2 minutes, so I have been listening to the same song (if you can call it a song) about 25-30 times now.
The best part about it snowing yesterday is that it didn't happen while I was at work.
This is the view from my porch. I'm very lucky to have an apartment that when you look out the window you see trees instead of the building next to you.
As a rough estimate, I'd say we got about 2 inches here, which is a lot for kirkland. Navigating the roads was fun. Devin and I went to Denny's at around 3 am last night, and the one waiter on duty there was very surprised to see us, that he didn't expect anyone to be out in the snow.
As bad as yesterday was, today was 10 times worse. When I left home, there were only patches of snow left over from the night before, and when I got to work, the roads were covered in white. It started not as snow, but as hail. Big, thick hailstones that fell in torrents and covered the roads. I fully expected to find the store closed when I got there, but no. My boss was still holding out some hope for a profitable evening, and when I arrived there were deliveries backed up, some as late as 40 minutes.
I managed to take one order successfully, though it took me almost half an hour. (It wasn't even half a mile away). I told my boss that it just wasn't possible to get all these deliveries out, but he wanted me to take one more, so I did.
Well, I almost did. Well, not even almost. I gave up about 500 feet from the store, seeing as I was sliding all over the place just trying to get out of the parking lot. Also, even if it wasn't slippery as hell, traffic was so backed up, it would've taken me an hour just to get a mile up the road, so I turned around and went back.
I spent the next half hour calling people and telling them that we're not able to deliver to them after all. The majority of these calls went fine, most people were understanding and not surprised at all. A few, however, were actually angry. I don't get it. Are these people so far removed that they can't see that drivers are people too? If you can't leave the house because the roads are too icy, what makes you think that a delivery driver can get to you? Who, upon looking out their window, thinks "Wow, look at all that snow! It would be dangerous for me to go out in weather like that, so I think I'll order pizza." Apparently, half of redmond thinks that way.
It wasn't all bad though. After calling all those people, we had about 30 undelivered pizzas sitting on our racks. We ate a couple, and traded a few to the starbucks next door for some hot chocolate, but there were lots left over.
There is a hill right behind the store that is fairly steep, and lots of people were unable to make it up the hill. Most just abandoned their cars and walked, but a few stayed behind. We brought those people some of the leftover pizza, and boy were they glad to have it.
By about 7:30 it had stopped snowing and they told me I could go home (I was the last driver to stay). I was nervous at first, but the roads were clear enough by then that I didn't have any difficulty.
So that's my snow adventure. All told, I think I would have rather stayed in bed today.
Can anyone out there read Korean? What does this say?
Does it say, "WARNING: Consuming this product will transform your mouth into a cavern of burning fire, from which you will pray for a death that will never come."
Despite being sick this week, things have been going pretty well for me. I have a good job which pays great, awesome co-workers, and a fat, happy kitty. So nothing to complain about there.
My computer turned 4 years old last month. I thought about just buying a whole new computer, but I just can't afford it. What I'm going to have to do is upgrade the most important bits (Motherboard, Processor, Memory, Video Card), while keeping the other stuff the same. My sound card, Hard-Drives, DVD-Rom all work perfectly well, so I don't see any reason to upgrade. I did some research online, and it looks like it will run me only about $500 if I buy slightly less than top-of-the-line, which is well within my means. I should have it within 1 or 2 months.
I've been playing World of Warcraft again. I have a 35th level Orc Warrior. I think I'm gonna stop though, because I don't like how much it really takes over my life (it's one of the main reasons I haven't been updating).
I bought three more CDs yesterday. I'll skip the album art format this time.
